⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
LOVED this story – a fantastic start to a new series!

What a fantastic start to a new series! This is the first book in Samantha Young’s Adair Family series, and it was just such a well written, good story. In some ways it was very different from any of the previous books I’ve read by Samantha Young, and a change of pace from most of the books I’ve been reading recently. Although this is romantic suspense, and there is definitely passion and steam, the focus for this was really the characters and their growth.

Robyn has come to Scotland after leaving her job as a cop when she had an incident that left her with a long recovery from multiple gunshot wounds. She is seeking to connect with Mac, the father that abandoned her when she was fourteen, and get to know him again while resolving the many issues she deals with resulting from that abandonment. Lachlan was a famous actor who now owns and runs an exclusive resort for celebrities. Mac has provided security for Lachlan for the last 10 years and he and Robyn develop an immediate irritation with each other and provoke each other with every interaction. Lachlan because he is incredibly protective of Mac, whom he sees as not only an employee but a best friend and family member, and Robyn feels resentment for Lachlan and what he represents in her loss of her father in her life.

Immediately we are thrust into a mystery as someone is targeting Lachlan and his resort and as a result Mac becomes a target and is badly injured in an attack not long after Robyn arrives in Scotland. What follows is a complex, well told story in which we get to know Robyn, Mac, Lachlan and his brothers and sister. This isn’t just a simple romance, but a story about family and dysfunction and resolving conflicts. Robyn is truly a strong protagonist who is incredibly independent, self aware and able to take care of herself. Lachlan and her have an immediate attraction but both fight the attraction for a good while so we have a slow burn before they give in to that attraction.

I was completely immersed in this story and the characters and was sad to reach the end – I can’t wait for the next installment in the series!

I received an Advanced Reader Copy and have voluntarily left an honest review.
