Dark, intense and angsty!
Layla and Jarred were foster siblings in a horrific foster home. Jarred did everything he could to be Layla’s protector until they were separated when they left the foster system. When the story opens Layla is living with her adoptive parents and about to embark on a fresh start at a university. She has a lot of baggage that she carries, and finds it difficult meeting people and being out and about. When she shows up at school, to her surprise her childhood protector is there, but seem to have only hate for her.
Layla and Jarred have been separated for years and although both have been searching for each other, this is very much a bully, enemies to lovers situation. Jarred seems to have a lot going on in his background with his father and a girl at school, and it’s clear that there are dark secrets at play. It’s hinted that Layla has deep anxieties and might also suffer from PTSD, but we only get glimpses of this. I wasn’t sure what to expect going in to this one, but I actually LOVED it. I got hooked early on and desperately wanted answers to some of the things that were being hinted at. The ending completely took me by surprised and I can’t wait until we get the next book so we can see what happens!
