Return to Monte Carlo by Cate C. Wells

Return to Monte Carlo will absolutely be one of my favorite books this year. My first foray into romance was sneaking Harlequin Presents from my grandmother and reading them under my covers with a flashlight late at night. Even now I love reading or rereading Presents and Moderns with their very alpha male Heroes who carry an air of arrogance and confidence and usually just take what they want causing so much angst along the way to Happy Ever After. My absolute favorite of these were the “marriage in trouble” trope and I feel like we never get enough of them.

Return to Monte Carlo fits right in with all of those Presents and Moderns that I love so much, but it also differs from them in some really crucial ways. With Return to Monte Carlo we get many steamy consensual non-consensual scenes that really set this book apart, and we have a Hero who by the end is willing to literally drop to his knees for his woman.

I love that this book takes place in the early eighties and the off the cuff references to that time period that are thrown in here and there really lend to the nostalgia I felt while reading this book. The angstier a book, the happier I am and Return to Monte Carlo was such a complete pleasure to read from start to finish. I absolutely loved this fresh take on a classic tropes.
