If You Hate Me by Helena Hunting

If You Hate Me has a large range of tropes that it hits – brother’s best friend, hockey, enemies to lovers, roommates to lovers and more. It’s funny, incredibly steamy, but also deals with some heavy emotional topics as well. I had a little trouble getting into the story at first and almost put it down, but I’m really glad I didn’t. Enemies to Lovers can be tricky, and for some reason in the first part of this, Beatrix and Tristan’s antics and fighting came across as immature rather than funny. However, once it moves past them fighting all the time over ridiculous things, everything changes and I ended up loving both of them and rooting for them. This author did a great job of creating characters with a lot of depth. Both of them have things from their upbringing that have shadowed them into adulthood and I loved how realistic those issues were and how the characters moved through them. For a romantic comedy there was a level of depth to those things that really added to the story for me.

What also added to my enjoyment was the cast of side characters. I’m hoping this is the start to a long series because there were so many characters introduced here that I really want to see more of and know more about. I’m not sure if there are plans for more with Tristan’s brothers, but we got some glimpses of them and their stories really intrigued me and felt unfinished withing this book, so I’m hoping somewhere down the line we see more of each of them. The next book in the series is an age gap with a father’s friend trope and I am SO excited for that and can’t wait to read it.

I both listened to and read this at the same time, I loved the narration of this. Both of them were perfect for this and really made the story come to life. Definitely looking for more from each of them.
