Tessa Hale has a sneak peek of her upcoming fantasy, why choose romance, Twilight of Embers, releasing January 19th!
“Are you hurting?”
I took a moment to search my body. “No,” I said honestly.
Concern laced his expression. “What woke you up? Nightmare?”
I shook my head slightly. “I was hot.”
A grin pulled at Knox’s mouth. “You’ve got a Cáel blanket keeping you warm.”
He didn’t seem upset by this. Quite the opposite. He seemed…pleased.
Did Knox know that Cáel and I had kissed? That Cillian and I had danced what felt like a lifetime ago? Panic raced through me.
“What’s going on in that beautiful brain?” he asked softly.
“It doesn’t…bother you?”
Knox’s hand lifted to my face. His fingers traced my features in a soothing pattern. “I know it’s new to you, but I’ve always known there would be one woman for me and my brothers.”
My eyes flared. “You have?”
He nodded, a finger tracing my lips. “It’s how we all grew up. It’s our…culture.”
My mind spun. Were they in some sort of cult or something?
A low chuckle escaped Knox. “I love watching those wheels turn. I know it’ll take some getting used to, but be honest. Do you feel drawn to all of us? To Cáel and Cillian and Maddox and Easton?”
I didn’t miss the shadow that passed over his eyes as he spoke his brother’s name. But I couldn’t lie, not to Knox, not when he was being vulnerable with me.
“Yes,” I breathed.
Relief washed over him.
“But,” I hurried to go on, “not all of those people feel drawn to me, Knox.”
He shook his head, his thumb sweeping gently across my bruised cheek. “Mad and East each have their own baggage, but that doesn’t mean they don’t want you.”
I wasn’t so sure about that, and my uncertainty must have registered on my face because Knox brushed his lips across mine.
“Just give it time. Let things unfold naturally.”
Easy for him to say.
“Why are you having a heart-to-heart in the middle of the night?” Cáel grumbled behind me.
I couldn’t help it. I giggled. The expulsion of air and tension felt like heaven after holding so much in.
“It’s your fault,” Knox shot back. “You’re an overgrown heater.”
Cáel just pulled me tighter against him, and I didn’t miss the hard length that nestled against my ass. My core clenched, heat spreading through me.
“I’m cozy,” Cáel retorted.
Knox arched an eyebrow. “Cozy? Since when does the Lord of Pain say cozy?”
“Shut up,” Cáel growled.
They bantered back and forth, but I couldn’t hear a word because my skin felt like it was on fire. Need pulsed between my legs. My breasts felt heavy, and my nipples pebbled.
Knox froze mid-sentence, his nostrils flaring. “Hayden?”
My breaths came quicker.
Cáel muttered a curse. “Are you hurting, Little One?”
I nodded, words escaping me.
His fingers trailed lower, to the hem of my pajama pants that had magically appeared for me last night. “Aching?”
The air caught in my throat. “Yes.”
“Want me to ease it?” Cáel whispered hoarsely.
“Please,” I begged.
